Sarah Asare (SA): Tell us, who is Samuel Nii Martei Laryea?

Samuel Martei Laryea (SML): Samuel is an upcoming professional boxer who takes boxing seriously, I train from Monday to Friday. I wake up at 4:00 am to prepare myself for training, I put my bag at my back and jog from my home at Shiabu to Korle Gonno. I do not stop until I reach the gym, I clean the area and pack all the equipments and wait for my coach [Coach George Smart Abbey of Accra Boxing Gym] to arrive.

SA: Tell us more about your family background?

SML: Well I come from a Christian home, in fact my mum is a Deaconness and a Prophetess, every evening she calls me and encourage me to go to church. Sometimes I follow her, other times I don’t, but I try to maintain praying. That is when I wake up and before going to bed.

SA: Do you have sisters and brothers?

SML:  Yes, we are six and I am the second born.

SA: Share with us your dreams in boxing

SML: I have taken boxing as my carrier so I am not going to joke with my life until I win a world title or a Global Title. I am focused on making the best for my life so I can be proud of myself and shame those who do not believe in me.

SA: Tell us about your amateur background?

SML: My amateur background is good. I have the chance to fight and train with a lot of champions. In 2018, I was in the finals against Wahid Omar (2016 Rio Olympian), I won silver. The late Commey was tough but I fought him not once, not twice but four times and I showed my class. I was in the national team and I am proud of my journey.

SA: Where do you want your boxing dreams to take you? Are you relocating to pursue boxing overseas?

SML: I want my boxing dream to take me around the world, many countries but I am not in a rush. I have been taking advise from champions outside and the situation out there is tough. I am in Ghana, I want to be a champion in Ghana first and after I will take on the world

SA: You are very active on social media (Facebook), that’s unpopular with a lot of Ghanaian boxers, tell us more

SML: Formerly, boxers were seen as illiterates but now we go to school. I have observed that in our present world, social media is now the number one selling platform for everyone. I observe and learn from bloggers and I read books on success.

SA: How did the name Eagle Eye come about?

SML: Sometimes when I am with my friends, they call me “onaaniii”[you see things], eagle you have eyes and you can see so many punches and block them. I thought of it and realized it’s a good name, so I adopted it as my stage name. It testifies my great defensive skills.

SA: What advise do you have for other upcoming boxers?

SML: My advise is simple, if you are a boxer, take training serious and if you are combining education and boxing take your books serious. Make good friends, do not listen to people who put you down. Believe that  you can do it. Personally I have passed through that but I did not let it get to me, I am confident that one day I will sit back and laugh after I have achieved all my dreams.

SA: Any final words for your fans and your team investing in you?

SML: I want all my fans to believe in me because I am very hungry for success and I will never disappoint them.
