With a week to the 2022 Ghana National Individual Championship tournament, Boxinghana.com caught up with Coach Abdul WALIU, the coach in charge of the Northern Boxing Club to ascertain the team level of preparedness for the tournament.
The Ghana National Individual Championship is an open elite tournament where all amateur boxers in Ghana will contest for a spot in the national boxing team and eventually represent Team Ghana on the international scene. This year’s edition is a 3 day event to be hosted in Accra. Read more about the tournament here.
Coach Waliu himself was a former boxer who represented the Northern Region from 2007 to 2016, combining boxing, academics and work. In 2011 he made his debut at the National level when he represented Northern Region at the Unity Games competing in the Middleweight division. He bowed out of the tournament at the preliminary stage.
Being one of the beneficiaries of the coaching recruitment excerise facilitated under the George Lamptey GBF lead administration, he expressed his gratitude to the former President and Coach OFORI Asare for the recommendation.
Coach WALIU focuses a lot of his attention on the juvenile boxers because it’s quite challenging with regards to the older boys up north. However, he is confident in his 3 man Hit Squad who are aiming at causing an upset and earning a place in the national team in their various weight classes.
The Northern Boxing Club Coach lamented that his side has had to train without much needed logistics but are in high spirits and believe that all three members will put on a good show as they make their debut on the national stage, and earn exposure
