The moment this fight was announced I began digging deep into the archives of these two glamourous boxers.
Frankly, after assessing the exploits of Mickey Garcia in the ring, I noticed his style of fighting was one dimensional. No sways and shakes.
Garcia’s tango with Robert Easter Jr. was one of the fights I didn’t relish though he won.
Garcia wobbled against Vargas in a fight I felt was so close to call. That was somewhere in the 10th.
When he moved up to face Adrien Broner, I knew Broner would disgrace himself. We all know how effective disappointing Broner is always in serious fights.
But these are just the preambles to my main issues on the Garcia/Spence thriller.
THE FIGHT:
I watched the fight closely and I realized Garcia went in for cash. Selling over 47,000 PPV slots is understandably a huge package for the ambitious Mexican. Why not? It’s a mind game.
From the very first round to the 12th, Garcia was totally outclassed, outboxed and schooled. But this was not how he fought against Lipinet? So what was his bane?
By round 5 he had gotten a minor cut on the eye. That was where I realized the hurly burly was done.
By my predictive stoppage round for Spence, 10th, Garcia had really showed signs of deterioration. His cornermen did the needful but the Mexican showed heart.
You see, after PACMAN knocked out David Diaz at 135, he went up at 147 to make Oscar De La Hoya surrender in round 9, then got back at 140 to demolish Ricky Hatton in 2 rounds. This is exactly what Mikey Garcia is attempting to do.
The one sided showdown ,for me is,and never should be attributed to body size.
In fact it’s about the technician being “technicianed”.
Spence is quality. My predictive stance against Garcia losing was when I watched Spence fight the championship Kell Brook inside the latter’s in backyard- and he got KOed.
Rather I am disappointed in Spence’s lack of speed and moving venom in the ring.
AGAINST PACMAN NEXT:
All happened inside the ring after the fight. And I was a bit surprised. For once.
I was tabling down the likes of Terrence Crawford , Shawn Potter or the Thurman.
To be practical, I am a fan of Manny,as much as any of you guys but I am aware of things to be taken into reckoning such as age difference, both of them are southpaw and where in Errol will be dedicated to training Manny will have distractions such as his duties as congressman in his native country.
I love Spence. And from indications he has proven to be the cynosure of a Welterweight beast at IBF.
I personally believe Manny should have walked away from the sport a couple of fights ago, not that he can’t fight any more, but he is not the same hungry, relentless fighter he used to be . And that can be a weakness against Spence.
Let’s see how the purse bid would go if the Pacquio call would materialize. Looks like certain.
