The 2024 Boxing Ghana Awards highlighted the vibrancy and excellence of Ghanaian boxing, leaving a lasting impression on the game. Joseph Commey was honored with the prestigious “Elite Amateur Boxer of the Year” title, standing out among a competitive field of nominees.
Boxing Ghana has established itself as a key platform for preserving and promoting the sport’s rich heritage, both in Ghana and internationally. This year’s awards celebrated the exceptional talent and dedication driving the future of Ghanaian boxing.

Nominees for the “Elite Amateur Boxer of the Year” category included Theophilus Kpakpo Allotey, Joseph Commey, Mohammed Aryeetey, and Amadu Mohammed. Out of 782 votes cast, Joseph Commey secured victory with 309 votes (39.5%), earning the esteemed title.

Born on May 5, 2003, Joseph Commey is a talented Ghanaian amateur boxer. He represented Ghana at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, securing a silver medal after defeating India’s Hassam Uddin Mohammed in the semifinals. Unfortunately, Commey was unable to compete in the final against Northern Ireland’s Jude Gallagher due to illness and was declared unfit to fight. He trains at the Black Panthers Boxing Club in Accra under the guidance of Coach Ebenezer Adjei. Joseph is also the younger brother of the late John Commey, a promising boxing talent who passed away on August 22, 2020. Before the 2022 Commonwealth Games, Joseph had an unbeaten record in amateur boxing.

Close contenders for the “Elite Amateur Boxer of the Year” award were National Super Flyweight title holder Theophilus Kpakpo Allotey, with 225 votes (28.8%), Amadu Mohammed, with 174 votes (22.3%), and Mohammed Aryeetey, who received 122 votes (15.6%). These results reflect the dedication and talent of Ghana’s elite amateur boxers.

The Boxing Ghana Awards celebrated these milestones and encouraged businesses and individuals to support the sport. Sammy Ofosuhene, CEO and Managing Chief Editor of Boxing Ghana, expressed appreciation to the voters and applauded the significant contributions of Ghanaian boxers to the sport.
