PINA SETTLES FOR BRONZE

David Pina has won a bronze medal in the Paris Olympics following a unanimous points defeat by Uzbekistan’s world champion and Rio Olympics gold medallist Hasanboy Dusmatov on Sunday, August 4.

Pina becomes Cape Verde’s first ever boxer to win an Olympic medal.

With the earlier defeat defeat of Morocco’s world champion Khadija Mardi by Australia’s middleweight Catlin Parker, Algeria’s Imane Khelif is the only African boxer remaining in the competition out of the 23 African boxers registered for the Paris Olympics.

Khelif, who’s battling a stormy gender debate on her participation in the Paris Olympics, will take on Thailand’s world silver medallist Janjaem Suwannapheng in the semi-finals on Thursday, August 6. She beat the Thai boxer in last year’s Worlds in New Delhi, India where Khelif was disqualified for failing the eligibility test.
