Books Paris ticket to become the 19th boxer from Africa to qualify for the Games
It’s dance and celebrations in DR Congo as Brigitte Mbabi stops Cape Verde’s Africa welterweight champion Ivanusa Moreira in the third round of their welterweight quarter-final to become Africa’s 19th boxer to qualify for the Paris Olympics.
Mbabi now joins two other welterweights, Algeria’s Imane Khelif and double African champion Alcinda Dos Santos from Mozambique both of whom booked their Paris tickets in Africa’s qualifiers last year in Dakar, Senegal where 18 boxers qualified for the Games.
The victory also puts to rest who’s the better between the two boxers after Moreira cried foul, citing biased officiating in their final welterweight bout during the inaugural Mandela African Boxing Cup in Durban, South Africa in April.
