Ghana Boxing Federation has released the flyer for the 2022 National Championship. It features three members of the last Bombers Squad. Two Commonwealth bronze medalists, Wahid Omar and Jessie Lartey and rising female boxer Fairuza Osman.
The preliminary stages of the championship will be held on Thursday 17, Friday 18 February at 2:00pm each day at the Sports Hall and the final will be at the Bukom Square at 6pm.
BoxinGhana.com has been speaking with some coaches and boxers across the country, who will be participating in the tournament.
Here are their expectations and goals going into the competition;
2016 Light heavyweight Individual champions’ silver medalist Bawa Ganiu aims to reclaim glory for the Upper West Region. He revealed that, himself and his other team mates have been training in sub-standard setting with very few equipment. They are therefore hoping to make it to the national team and gain exposure.
Coach Elvis Robertson, one of the coaches of the Eastern Regional team expects his team to put up a performance that the people of Eastern Region will be proud of. In his own words, he said “we know the boxers in Accra are good, we have trained and are hopeful of getting a boxer into the National Team.
The Volta Region team are still in the process of finalizing their team but are aiming at a good showing.
“We are not putting so much pressure on the team, we want to improve our performance” said one of their coaches.
Coach Randy Amugi of Jamestown Boxing Club aims to present 8 boxers maximum with the target of entering the national team as first choice to represent Ghana at the Commonwealth Games.
Coach Randy also noted that he is very confident in his team as they have been going through intensive endurance training.
