NIGERIA, UGANDA BOXING LEAGUES MOVE WITH THE CHANGING TIMES IN SPORTS

Boxers can put some food on the table for their families as sports becomes….

The cash incentives in Nigeria’s Yucateco and Uganda’s Champions leagues are in line with the changing trends in today’s sports world.

Commercialisation of sports is the in-thing for the progressive minds.

That’s what should be emulated by other boxing leagues in Africa.

Federations can also borrow a leaf from Uganda federation President Moses Muhangi’s marketing acumen and creativity in the Champions League which attracts a capacity crowd that adds more value when seeking sponsorship.

If your league lacks an enthusiastic capacity crowd just know you’re doing badly, and you need to up your game or close shop and let the progressive minds take charge.

Boxing organisers have no choice but to move with the changing times as sports becomes more commercialized. You can’t argue even in the past boxers were not being paid, and therefore it’s not a must to do it now.

That’s a defeatist and primitive mentality which belongs to the dustbin of history.

Even the International Boxing Association (IBA) has moved on with the changing times in sports by introducing prize money and the popular Champions’ Night series.

Boxers participating in Nigeria’s Yucateco league are paid weekly allowances as well as other incentives. The most valuable boxer in each weight category will also receive the sum of 2 million naira at the end of the season.

Twelve boxing clubs are competing for the grand prize of N50 million in Season 2 of the Yucateco boxing league.
