Nigerian world titles hopes adopt Bukom, Accra as training base
A number of Nigerian boxers have found Bukom in Accra as the best training base in Africa as they dream of traveling to USA and Europe to become World Champions.
In Bukom, there are over 20 boxing gyms, and all have expert trainers. Though most are not well equipped or fitted with modern training facilities, they produce world beaters and champions.
Oluwaseun Joshua Wahab aka Seunzy, the current Ghana National Welterweight Champion hails from Nigeria and trains under very tough conditions at the Charles Quartey Foundation Gym at James Town in Accra.
But Wahab is not bothered about the conditions as his focus is wide and far. Through hard work, he has been recognized by the professor Azumah Nelson who believes in discipline and humility as the weapons to succeed.
He has been offered the opportunity to fight on the “Azumah Nelson Fight” series and his performance and confidence keep on rising.
Many Ghanaian boxing fans believe he has what it takes to reach the world stage and as he fights again on December 9, 2017, he hopes his loyal fans will be behind him, though he is going to hold his native Nigeria flag.
Felix Williams who holds the World Boxing Federation (WBF) International and World Boxing League (WBL) titles also comes from Nigeria, and he came purposely for boxing. Luckily for him he has married a Ghanaian and blessed with a child.
He recently added the IBO International featherweight title to his achievements on the Dons PPromotions bill, and he believes many doors are opening for him to hit the world stage.
He lives at James Town with other Ghanaian boxers and train daily at the popular Attoh Quarshie Gym.
Landmark Promotions have relocated Nigerian boxer, Isaac Ekpo, permanently to Ghana after his world title fight lose to Robert Stieglitz.
Ekpo, rated number seven by the WBO, is the current WBO Africa super-middleweight champion, a feat he achieved in Accra. He holds a 22-2 fight record, with 16 knockout victories.
Anthony Kermah, Chief Executive of Landmark Promotions, managers of the African pride, said the boxer is permanently in Accra to campaign for his next big fight.
“We are brothers in the sub-region, so it should not be difficult for a Nigerian to adopt Ghana as his home, also he will learn to be courageous and endure punishment in the gym, as a boxer with the aim of becoming a champion” he said.
