The Greater Accra Boxing Association (GABA) has released details for this year’s edition of schools boys and girls contest.
The boxing event is for juveniles aged below 15 years. The event forms part a series of boxing tournaments by the association to improve boxing within the region as well as to create a Greater Accra Boxing Team.
The 2022 edition will be organized in accordance with International Boxing Association weight categories for school boys and girls. This will be first time young boxers in Ghana will be fighting in the weight classes. There are 16 weight classes for boys and 13 weight classes for girls.
The event is expected to feature boxers aged 15 years and below in various boxing clubs in the Greater Accra Region.
According to the General Secretary of the Association Mr. Alex Ntiamoah, this weekend’s feature is for only the preliminaries and Semi finals. The finals of this event will be held later in August during the 2022 Mega Homowo Boxing Tournament expected to feature top boxers from the Greater Accra Region.
The details of the event are as follows;
Weighing and Medicals will be held at 7 :00 am each morning from 24th to 26th, June 2022 at the Will Power Gym.
The fights will begin at 4pm on Friday and 2pm on Saturday and Sunday.
Prior to the release of these details, the Association interacted with stakeholders in the Region. During a meeting with the Boxing Coaches Association of Ghana, Chairman Evans Bernie Johnson encouraged the coaches to support the Association to help move boxing forward.
He explained that the new style of fighting in weight classes is to protect the boxers.
