Boxing Is What We Can Do Best, We Need Support – Female Boxers, Sarah Apew And Perpetual Okaidja

 

Two female boxers (members of the national team, the Black Hitters of Ghana) who appeared on ‘The Big Fight Night’ on Omashi TV last Friday night have appealed for support to be able to carry on their dreams and aspirations.

 

Sarah Apew of the James Town Boxing Gym and Perpetual Okaidja of the Black Panthers Gym were the first females to feature on the most popular boxing show and both expressed their ambitions to become top professional boxers.

 

However Sarah Apew wants to join the Ghana Armed Forces to become a soldier.

 

Both represented Ghana at the 13th African Games held in Accra, however Pep did Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) and won a gold medal in the demonstration sport.

 

She lamented that no reward has come to her after the Games, but continue to pray and expect because it is in the history books of the 13th African Games that she was the only gold medalist in MMA for Ghana.

 

They sided with the Algerian boxer, Imane Khelif who was discriminated upon during the Paris 2024 Olympic Games due to sexual issues, but went on to win gold.

 

Sarah Apew who hails from the Oti Region and came to Accra to play football and diverted to boxing said persons with unique talents should be encouraged and motivated.

 

“My biggest challenge is when am going for training and people ask me why boxing and not any other sport, but I tell them that is what I love and chose” she noted.

 

Perpetual Okaidja, also a former footballer while growing up noted that sports is not easy, so if someone chooses to do sports and he or she is exceptional; they should be given positive support to excel.

 

“Where I come from in Bukom, boxing is what we love and can do better, so I decided to box, my whole family is into boxing so I am very comfortable as a boxer and I know boxing will take me to places” she expressed.

 

On a programme that featured females in boxing, Ms Sarah Lotus Asare, Ghana’s first female Match Maker, Administrator at Wisdom Boxing Gym and Africa Rep of WBC Cares also graced the exciting show.
