🇫🇷 Countdown to 2024 Paris Olympic Games
WHO’LL BE THE LUCKY 9?
Olympic Games Tripartite Commission still mum on the nine Universality Places
Anxiety is mounting as African boxers eagerly wait to see how many of them will be among the lucky nine to secure the Universality Places.
The quotas are allocated to National Olympic Committees by the Olympic Games Tripartite Commission which was due to confirm the quotas on June 7.
Africa leads with 35 National Olympic Committees eligible for the nine quotas.
The Americas have 18 eligible National Olympic Committees for the nine quotas, Asia 17, Oceania 14 and Europe 9.
All of them have applied for the nine quotas, five for women and four for men.
Universality Places are a lifeline to athletes from underrepresented National Olympic Committees. They are designed to increase the diversity of participating nations across the sports programme of the Olympic Games.
While some nations may qualify dozens, or even hundreds, of athletes for the Olympic Games, others are left with very few athletes once qualification is complete in each sport.
Universality Places are available in the qualification systems of select sports for nations with traditionally small delegations.
The Tripartite Commission is faced with tough choices to make here for nine places. The Commission is made up of representatives from the International Olympic Committee, Association of National Olympic Committees and Association of Summer Olympic International Federations.
