Ghana’s wonderboy at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics Samuel Takyi & the new sensation are set to lead the Ghana national boxing teams, Men and Women(Black Bombers and Hitters) in their quest to make a big impression at home in the 13th Africa Games also known as Accra 2023 in Accra.
Takyi, the fourth Ghanaian boxer to win an Olympic medal – featherweight bronze at the Tokyo Olympics and Theophilus Kpakpo Allotey the 3rd ranked Flyweight in Africa- are currently in Busto Arsizio, Italy with 5 others seeking a slot to the Paris 2024 in Olympic games and also gearing up for the “carpet bombing” mission in Accra.
Takyi who now fights in the light-welterweight division is really set with Allotey to add the boxing Gold medal of Ghana at the Africa Games(previously known as the All Africa Games).
For all their boxing prowess, Ghana have yet to win the overall crown in the African Games.
Ghana can boast of only 3 Gold Medals from the Africa Games since it started in 1965 in Congo Braziville( Azumah Nelson – Featherweight & Adama Mensah – Heavyweight in 1978, Algiers, also Steve DOTSE in 1991, Cairo.
Whether Takyi and Allotey will enable Ghana clinch the crown this time around remains to be seen.
The 24-year-old Takyi ended Ghana’s 49-year-drought to win bronze in Tokyo, the fourth Olympic boxing medal for Ghana since Prince Amartey’s middleweight bronze at the 1972 Munich Olympics and emerged the only medallist out of 49 boxers from Africa who participated in the Tokyo Olympics.
Other medal potentials to look out for in the Ghana team includes Joseph Commey – Lightweight(2022 Commonwealth Silver medalist in Birmingham – UK), Abdul Wahid Omar – Featherweight( two times Commonwealth bronze medalist and 2016 Ghana ‘ s sole Olympian),Amadu Mohammed – Bantamweight( 2023 Men’s world championship quarterfinalist) among others.
The rings at the Bukom Boxing Arena and Ga Mashie Hall will decide the fate of the Black Bombers and Hitters in the coming days.
