I will get rid of all corrupt officials in our confederation, says President Eyassu Berhanu
Africa Boxing Confederation (AFBC) President Eyassu Wossen Berhanu has vowed to get rid of undesirable elements who have tarnished the image of the continental body through corruption.
“It’s zero tolerance on corruption,” declared Berhanu from Durban where he’s attending the inaugural Mandela African Boxing Cup tournament.
“I want to make it known to our members that I’ll kick out those involved in corruption in our organisation, I want transparency and accountability, so to work with us you have to shape up or you ship out,” said Berhanu who hinted some AFBC officials will soon face the music.
“What has happened is shameful, senior AFBC officials eating prize money of boxers and others engaged in shady deals, I will not tolerate dishonesty and thieves during my tenure in office as the President. Everything must be done above board.”
Berhanu said since taking over as President last year in November, he has worked tirelessly to inject unity in the African boxing body.
“I’m happy to tell the world right now there’s unity of purpose in our organisation, we’re all working together as a team to open a new chapter in African boxing and bring the desired changes which will help our boxers benefit from their sweat,” said Berhanu.
He showered praise on the International Boxing Association (IBA) President Umar Kremlev for his support of Africa boxing, citing the Mandela African Boxing Cup event in Durban as a milestone in Africa’s boxing development. Kremlev is the brainchild of the tournament in
honour of renowned freedom fighter and South Africa’s first black President Nelson Mandela.
