Abigail Quartey: The Queen of the Ring and Boxing Ghana’s Female Boxer of the Year

The 2024 Boxing Ghana Awards celebrated the energy and excellence of Ghanaian boxing, leaving a profound impact on attendees. Abigail Quartey earned the distinguished “Female Boxer of the Year” title, triumphing over a strong pool of contenders.

Boxing Ghana has become a prominent platform for preserving and promoting the sport’s rich heritage within Ghana and internationally. This year’s awards showcased the extraordinary talent and contributions driving the sport’s bright future.

 

The nominees for “Female Boxer of the Year” included Abigail Quartey, Adelaide Gabatey, Blessing Larteley Lartey, and Janet Acquah. Out of 782 votes, Abigail Quartey emerged victorious, securing 392 votes (50.1%) to claim the coveted honor.

Abigail Quartey achieved a historic milestone, becoming the first Ghanaian female boxer to win a world boxing championship title. In the World Super Bantamweight division, Abigail displayed exceptional skill, determination, and patriotic pride in her bout against the United Kingdom’s Sangeeta Birdie. With an impressive record of 10 fights and 6 knockouts, she dominated her opponent with power and precision.

Following a closely contested match, Abigail secured victory as all three judges scored 98-91 in her favor, earning her a unanimous decision and her 9th professional career win. Currently ranked number one in Ghana’s Female Bantamweight division and 50th globally among 170 female boxers, the 28-year-old continues to make history.

 

Close runners-up for the “Female Boxer of the Year” title were Janet Acquah, who garnered 156 votes (19.9%), Blessing Larteley Lartey with 143 votes (18.3%), and Adelaide Gabatey with 121 votes (15.5%). These accomplishments underscore the dedication of female Ghanaian boxers.

 

The Boxing Ghana Awards celebrated these achievements and called on businesses and individuals to support the sport. Sammy Ofosuhene, CEO and Managing Chief Editor of Boxing Ghana, expressed gratitude to the voters and lauded the outstanding contributions of Ghanaian boxers to the sport.
