Three of Ghana’s finest amateur boxers and a coach have left for Turkey to participate in the Ahmed Juma International Boxing Tournament.

According to the President of the Ghana Boxing Federation (GBF), the programme is for 5 days starting from Monday September 10, 2018 and it is in honor of Turkish Olympian Ahmed Juma.

The boxers representing Ghana are JESSIE LARTEY, 69kg welterweight, who won Ghana’s only bronze medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia, WAHID OMAR, 64kg light welterweight and SULEMAN TETTEH, 56kg bantamwetght.

The GBF President hinted that the trip was sponsored by the Veep of the GBF, Mr. Samad, and they want to keep the nation’s top amateur boxers in shape and gain experience and exposure.

George Lamptey noted that they decided to support the boxers as it is difficult depending on government who does not feel for the development and promotion of amateur boxing, where the best boxers are groomed before they become professionals.

He said boxers who devote their time and energies to box for the nation should be rewarded or put on a salary scheme so that they would not be tempted to join the professional ranks.
