Prior to the commencement of the National Individual Championship, BoxinGhana.com did a feature story putting the spot light on the Northern Region
Speaking with Coach Waliu after the team bowed out of the tournament, he expressed gratitude for our coverage and support for the Northern contingent.
He further expressed gratitude to BoxinGhana.com for shedding light on the Regions participating in the tournament. He also took the opportunity to report on their performance in the the ongoing National Individual boxing championship,
“Northern Region represented with three boxers, namely Habib Janda, Mohammad Sugri Tia and Abdullah Bawah Zakaria.
During the bout of Mohammed Sugri Tia, he was commended arguably by many with the confidence he took into the ring which I think was impressive.
“In round three, the referee stopped the contest because he felt there was so much pressure on him [Mohammed Sugri] and he was not fighting back
“Habib Janda was the next of my boxers to mount the ring. Habib had the mind prepared for a knockout which I cautioned him that the opponent is a good boxer by all standards and must be extra careful in the ring with him.”
“As if my instructions were not enough he went in with his approach and fell short of stamina and upon the give and take punching style, he became more exhausted and he told me to end the bout in the third round.”
“Abdullah Bawah Zakaria was my third and final boxer to mount the ring.
Determined as he was, fought through the rounds and the verdict was a unanimous decision in favor of his opponent.”
This year’s tournament has had significant representation of the regions with Volta, Eastern and Upper West all making it to the final.
